If you are sourcing custom bags or hats from a factory for the first time, you will meet two acronyms almost immediately: OEM and ODM. Choosing the right model affects your budget, your timeline and how much of the design work lands on your desk. This guide explains both models in plain language, based on how we actually run these projects on our own production lines.
What is OEM?
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) means the factory produces goods based on your existing design — or applies your logo and brand elements to a design the factory already has. You control the brand; the factory contributes production capacity and technical execution. For bags and hats, a typical OEM order is: “Put our embroidered logo on this 6-panel cap in our brand colors.”
What is ODM?
ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) means the factory also handles product development: turning your idea, sketch or reference sample into a production-ready design. You bring the concept and the brand; the factory brings pattern making, material selection, sampling and engineering. A typical ODM request is: “We want a commuter backpack for our brand — here is a mood board and a target price.”
OEM vs ODM at a Glance
| OEM | ODM | |
|---|---|---|
| Design ownership | You provide the design | Factory develops it with you |
| Development time | Short — sampling can start immediately | Longer — add 1–3 weeks for design and pattern work |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher (development and sampling) |
| Uniqueness | Depends on your design | High — built for your brand |
| Best for | Brands with in-house design, promotional products, merch | Brands without a design team, new product lines |
Which Should You Choose?
- Choose OEM if you already have tech packs or finished designs, need merch or promotional items quickly, or are reordering an existing product.
- Choose ODM if you have a brand and a market but no product development team, or you want a differentiated product your competitors cannot buy off the shelf.
- Mix both — many of our clients start with OEM caps or totes to test the market, then move to ODM development once a bestseller emerges.
How the Process Works at Our Factory
- Inquiry — you send your design (OEM) or concept (ODM) and target quantity; we reply with a quotation within 24 hours.
- Sampling — pre-production samples in 5–7 days for OEM; ODM adds pattern development first.
- Bulk production — typically 25–40 days across our 4 production lines, with in-line quality control.
- Inspection and shipping — final random inspection, then sea, air or express delivery worldwide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ODM more expensive than OEM?
Per unit, prices are similar once production starts. ODM carries extra one-time development and sampling costs, which are usually partly refundable against your bulk order.
Who owns the design in an ODM project?
Agree on this before development starts. A reputable factory will sign an agreement confirming that custom-developed designs are exclusive to your brand.
Can I start with a small trial order?
Yes. Our MOQ is flexible depending on style and materials — small trial orders are a normal first step for new clients.
